I only wish I had started it right at the start of my trip, back on January 6, but it will still be a neat record of a truly fabulous year when I, sadly, get back to gloomy Galway next month. Even today I crashed a motorbike and had to pay 100 dollars, but I felt so ALIVE. And I was amazed by all the help I got off locals (thank God I can speak Spanish) when I pulled up on the side of the road!Ciaranhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13020007990416558279noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-859630543071726897.post-54982050351139638832010-11-26T08:09:36.336-08:002010-11-26T08:09:36.336-08:00Hi Ciaran,

I came to some similar conclusions while traveling in some so called poorer country's. What a lot of these people lack in material wealth they seem to more than make up for in quality of life and time for each other.
Peace and Love,
Paul GeraghtyAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12968514368455637167noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-859630543071726897.post-23578566413293578962010-11-09T10:46:21.322-08:002010-11-09T10:46:21.322-08:00@ Regina: Thanks for your positive comment, Reggie...@ Regina: Thanks for your positive comment, Reggie. I think your blog has been incredible this year, too, because you are exploring territory which is alien to most of us and doing so with incredible honesty. It is great to have the gift of being able to express yourself so well, even or especially at a time of great stress and upheaval. That's why you have so many readers, because they admire your honesty and willingness to look the big, bad monster in the eye.

@ Patrick: Thanks for your positive comments throughout my travels in 2010. I'm beginning to realise that money, career, etc, are nowhere near as important as the desire to feel fulfilled. Last year I moaned about working Bank Holidays in Ireland, this year I love going to work (for nothing) in Nicaragua. I really did have panic attacks in Spain in July and cannot believe it just a few months on.
Just as I can't believe I had so many doubts about taking this 12 month career break. It didn't really take courage, because I have the safety net of a job to go back to, but after 18 years in the Tribune I most definitely needed a change. Best of luck with the change, I know your boxing coaching with the poorest of the poor in Chicago already gives your life huge meaning. And you are a role model to young people who might not see a future without boxing.
The challenge for me now is to transform the optimism and adventure of 2010 into a more permanent change. So, like you, I still have to find long-term meaning and satisfaction. And, yes, there is fear of the unknown. But for me NOT changing things now holds more fear, once I realize I am (or was) unhappy with my life.Ciaranhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13020007990416558279noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-859630543071726897.post-9725209800367876462010-11-09T03:29:58.504-08:002010-11-09T03:29:58.504-08:00Great stuff as usual Ciaran! Inspirational to me as I contemplate a major career change to do something which will involve little monetary value, but abundance in meaning and satisfaction. There is a lot of that fear of the unknown attached though.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04918046904962404769noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-859630543071726897.post-54542723544194732362010-11-08T14:54:18.065-08:002010-11-08T14:54:18.065-08:00Sounds amazing Ciaran.
